Meet N. Barry Carver

Born to an assembly line worker and a grocery cashier, Barry grew up in the rust belt. His midwestern-bred common sense and plain dealing are sometimes taken for niavete - until a flash of a razor-edged wit confirms you're not dealing with some small town rube.

His self-depreciating humor and humble style belie a long list of accomplishments including careers as an soldier, newsman and actor - each of which depended on good instincts and perpetual training.

His first performances date back to the age of five where he entertained as a singer and impressionist for church and school gatherings. Ten years later, passing through flirtations with playing the ukulele, trumpet, French horn and harmonica, he began his first serious work on the stage.

A wide selection of roles in the classics followed: from Aristophanes to Shakespeare and from Tom Stoppard back to Molieré. The on-stage roles were matched with off-stage study through year round intensives at school and summer stock at the venerable Genesius Guild. In everything from painting scenery to parading around in tights more than any male should, Barry followed his passion for the stage right into college.

At Augustana College, while studying in the fields of Television and Theatre, he was lured into squeezing philosophy, physics and religion into his diet. Soon enough it was a sincere study of ethics - leading toward a ministry in the Lutheran church. All this changed when the grants which had allowed him to go to college evaporated under the Reagan presidency.

At the end of 1981, as a newlywed, with his studies jeopardized by debt, Barry embarked on the least likely path anyone who knew him could imagine - he joined the Army. For the next two years he prepared for and served, in various capacities, the U. S. Army in Europe. Following which, with a handful of medals, he relocated to Salt Lake City and served Army in an on-call status for the next 10 years. He served those calls by returning to duty twice at the Pentagon, once to Indianapolis and once to Japan - offering humanitarian assistance after the Kobe earthquake in January 1995. Achieving the rank of sergeant, he is now an honorably discharged veteran.

After the dissolution of his first marriage (in '92) Barry completed a degree in Film and returned to his study of television with work in the news departments of two network affiliates in Utah. Advancing quickly through the ranks to producer - while nurturing his work in filmmaking - he became involved with the local media center and its annual film festival.

In the meantime he also held down jobs as a surgical cameraman, as a playwright and actor and as an entrepreneur selling bits of the Berlin Wall (having happily returned to Germany to film the wall's demise).

Working as both floor director and assistant producer for the local NBC station, he was contacted by a worker for that same media center he had worked for previously. The intriguing voice on the other end of that solicitation call... is now his second (and final!) spouse: Fabiana.

After celebrating a successful five years together Barry and Fabiana were joined in 2002 by a child, JohnAngelo - a wonderment and joy to any he meets. Young JohnAngelo, Barry claims, is proof that the almighty has forgiven him for his failed preparation for the ministry: "the boy is, honestly, better than I could ever have deserved or earned... he is simply a gift."

Clarity, cleverness and years as an actor in L.A., with hundreds of auditions, callbacks and, yes, even a few (non-stellar) bookings, Mr. Carver is uniquely qualified to represent the hard-working, never-say-die actors that it is his privilege to champion. His keen eye for talent and ability to clearly communicate with any level of 'the business' make him an indispensable asset and highly valued team player in the process of converting talent into celebrity and professional training into a professional wage.

In addition to long hours in the trenches at Studio Talent, Barry also:
  • Serves the Los Angeles County Office of Education on the Professional Actors Advisory Committee.

  • Speaks on incorporating ethics into the daily work of "show business".

  • Is the festival director for the Flickering Image Film & Video Festival.

  • Is a contributing member of Wolfesden.net

  • Has amassed many poems and stories, produced teleplays and screenplays - even published a book of his works (Sunday Best).

  • Produces radio programs (including "The Plays The Thing" for L. A. TheatreWorks and his own quiz-show "Who Knew"), as well as the occasional short film or play.
And, of course, he continues to work (now mostly behind the scenes) on several actors' rights issues.
